Am I Missing Anything?

In case you haven't read and memorized my self indulgent list of 100 things about me (listed on the tab above) something you should know - I'm an established over-packer. And not in a "Oh, ha ha, me too" kind of way, but more like in an "anxiety-ridden paranoid Boy Scout" kind of way. But I did my best to dial down the crazy for our hospital bags, because for the small amount of time I'm hoping we'll actually be at the hospital, I don't want to go too overboard. I've broken down our main bag in to subcategories, here's what we've got so far:

Toiletries:
Shampoo & Conditioner
Hair Brush
Toothbrushes
Hair Ties
Razor
Deodorant
Make-up
Chap stick
Maxi Pads
Nursing Pads
Nipple Cream

Clothes:
Laboring Gown (I'd like to wear my own clothes. I realize I'll probably have to throw the gown away. It's a sleeveless, tea length cotton night gown I bought for $4.48 at Targ.et off of the clearance rack)
Nursing Bra (I'll wear a regular one to the hospital)
Socks and Roo's (Underwear) (For both Mom and Dad) (AWWWWW)
Maternity Pants (to go home in)
Over sized Cardigan (In place of a robe)
Shirts (For both Mom and Dad)
Flannel Bottoms (For Dad)

Misc:
Pillows
Camera's & Chargers
Call List
iPad
Bose Speaker (For playing music from an iPod)
iPod

Food:
Cereal Bars
Apple Sauce
Crackers
Trail Mix
Gatorade
Stuff for the Nurses (I need to run by Cos.tco to pick up a large tin of Cookies or Chocolates as a thank you to the staff)

Diaper Bag:
Diapers  (I know the hospital will provide some)
Wipes
Feeding Cover
Baby Nail Clippers
Burpee's
Blankets
Mittens
Socks
Shirts (These were recommended by a friend who just had a baby. She said they're great because they won't disturb baby's tender belly button, and they have built in mittens which are ideal for two reasons 1. They provide protection from the baby's nails in case the stupid mittens you brought won't stay on. 2. Keeps your potentially germ plagued visitors from grabbing baby's hands - It's flu season, yo)
Hats
Three different outfits (ranging in sizes, cause we don't know how big or little our monkey will be)

So what say you ladies? Am I missing anything?

Okay - this is fresh in my mind and I'm a Type A packer too (though it was on my list to do on Thursday... and since we ended up in the hospital Wednesday night, we didn't pack quite as I was thinking *lol*).

*The hospital has shampoo, conditioner, maxi pads, and granny panties for your use for free. USE THEM instead of ruining your own! That first 24-48hrs you will be going through a LOT of pads, etc. there is just so much blood flushing out of your uterus/body. My hospital also provided cooling witch hazel pads to put in your underwear and a bactrin type spray and a water bottle to spray cold water on yourself as you pee (helps keep it from stinging so badly).

*My milk just came in last night (72hrs post delivery) which is pretty standard I guess. Most likely you won't even need nursing pads while you're in the hospital. If it makes you feel better, pack one set, but I doubt you'll even use them.

*My labor went so fast I didn't get to wear my laboring gown (believe me, by the time you're a 10 and pushing, naked is GOOD. You won't want shit on you, touching you, etc.). I did end up wearing mine afterwards the first day while I was laying there - WAY nicer to have than the stupid hospital gown.

*I wore my maternity pants home, but I am so sore from stitches, I kind of wish I'd just gone with yoga pants. Just a thought.

*Don't forget the chargers for your electronics!

*I totally forgot something for the nurses. Shit.

*Hospital has PLENTY of diapers - and again, they're free (if delivering at a hospital can be considered free). Don't bother bringing diapers and wipes - they even send home the opened packages with you.

*Good idea to bring a range of outfit sizes. 90% of the time in the hospital, she was naked and doing skin to skin with me (best for both of you and helps with the breastfeeding thing)...or we had her swaddled in one of the hospital blankets if people were holding her. It was nice to have a well fitting warm footie pajama outfit to dress her in for going home though.

Hope this helps!! You're so close!

Oh, and don't forget face lotion with your toiletries.

A nursing tank top is really handy if you have one already too!

I am so excited for you, Melissa! I cannot believe it's already that time for you!!!! You're gonna do awesome! So, here is the list that I give to my doula clients regarding hospital bags - I recommend taking two, one to bring with you for labor, the other to leave in the car until you are settled into your room after the baby is born.

For your labor bag, I recommend packing:
A change of clothes for the both of you (plus a sweatshirt for B)
A bathrobe
Toothpaste and toothbrush
Massage tools and lotion
A few pairs of socks
Slippers and/or flip flops
Ponytail holders and bobby pins
Lollipops (great for when you want a new taste in your mouth but aren't up for eating)
Snacks (nuts, fruit, and Clif bars are my favorites)
Water (preferably a reusable water bottle as you will need to drink 4-5 ounces per hour during labor)
Music player
Camera!
Pillows (I love a bed full of pillows -- I brought five!)
Baby book for footprints (they typically do the footprints before they move you to the third floor)

For your hospital-stay bag:
Clothes for the both of you
Clothes for the baby to come home in (they'll have all the clothes and diapers he'll need for during your stay)
Bath stuff

I'm thinking of you, sending lots of great labor vibes!!!

You won't need the baby nail clippers for a while yet. They recommend using baby nail files for the first couple of weeks because baby's nails are so soft you could easily clip their finger instead but otherwise the list looks awesome!!!!

Josey nailed most of my suggestions.

I was in the hospital for 5 days and took 2 showers. (because of c-section, I wasn't allowed the first 3) In no way shape or form did I feel like shaving. I could barely wipe my ass. Same with make up, I brought some, never touched it. It might make you feel better to have it though.

Chapstick is a MUST. Hairbrush, another necessity.

I sent Daddy home at night after the second night. Sleeping in the hospital is uncomfortable, yo. And somebody needed to be well rested! And, he can always run home while you and baby are napping to freshen up. So, I wouldn't pack more than jammies and 1 change for daddy. Unless your hospital is like a 40 minute drive or something.

I second the yoga pants comment, though. Yoga pants and a nursing tank = next best thing to naked in those early days. Also, gowns with buttons, to get boobies out while keeping tummy covered. I used to tuck Graham down in the gown...

Sweater is a great idea.

Pillows are necessary. I bought a bunch of $5 cheap-o's for L&D and learning to nurse. So glad I did. They were awesome. They help with positioning and they help protect you from the bed rails.

Definitely take your nurses some goodies (L&D and Mat).

Those shirts are perfect and are just like the ones my hospital put him in. They will provide shirts and blankets while you're there. We kept him naked and did skin to skin or in a shirt a blanket the whole stay. Baby really only needs a going home outfit, socks and hats.

HATS!! They will give you one at the hospital, and you can take it home, but I'd get a warmer one for going home in. And he'll need a hat even indoors for the first couple of weeks.

The mittens will not stay on. I repeat, the mittens will not stay on.

Personally, I wouldn't be bothered with a nursing cover in the hospital. When you're first getting the hang of things, it's just an extra thing to get in the way. If you do feel like covering up, there are blankets everywhere.

OK, that's all I can think of. The only thing I saw missing was hats :)

Tissues!! and maybe toilet paper...

The hospital will have some but when you need to wipe your snotty nose or sore bum theirs will feel like sandpaper!

Socks with grippy things on tht bottom. My hospital wouldn't let me get up and walk around without them!

And pillows!!!

I also wished for my own blanket from home. I'm cold natured, and those hospital ones just weren't enough.

You have a third vote for yoga pants! Real clothes were just plain overwhelming for me the first few weeks.

I packed diapers, wipes, pads... everything. And didn't use a bit of it. Let the hospital provide you with the disposables!

Great lists! I'm going to bookmark this post so I can refer back to it later.

How about eye drops (I have dry eyes) and ear plugs, so you can get some sleep.
