Two Months

Dearest Leah,

This past month has been pretty incredible with you. It feels like you and I are starting to get in more of a rhythm. I won't dare say I've started to figure you out, because on a regular basis, the moment I make a declarative statement in your regard you, without fail, prove me wrong.
It's like like you're sixteen already.

In the beginning of this month (February 2nd to be exact), you made eye contact and smiled at me for the very first time. And it wasn't just gas. It was an actual response to my high pitched nonsensical rambling. And I never thought the day you were born could be out shined, but holy crow... That very moment when you looked into my eyes and smiled - it was like you knew who I was and you were happy to see me.
And my heart just about imploded.

The third happiest occasion was when you and I both slept SEVEN hours straight without so much as a bathroom trip or my having to reach into your bassinet to turn your ocean noise machine back on. I seriously do not think I have slept seven hours straight since June of last year.
PLEASE feel free to do that ANYTIME.

You have unfortunately developed a dermatalogical issue that both your dad and I have. Eczema. Sorry bout that. One day you were particularly cranky and wouldn't stop squirming and fussing, even thought I'd done almost everything to make you comfortable. I noticed that your eyebrows and in between your eyes had some bumpiness so on a whim I started to rub a little back and forth. You immediately stopped fussing and squirming and your eyes glazed over. You were itchy. You poor thing. I'd be pissed off too if I had an itch I couldn't scratch and couldn't tell anyone about it. That blows!

Since you were about three weeks old you've gone through this kind of witching hour between 5 and 10pm that made your dad and I want to jam forks into our temples. Okay, it's not as much me as it is your dad. The poor guy takes it pretty personally and swears it's a plot against him. But it seems like your are slowly growing out of it. Maybe having two or three good nights per week.

You've starting to get a little more comfortable with your car seat and the swings we have for you here at the house - which is FANTASTIC because now I can actually inhale a little breakfast before you start screaming to be fed again.

At your two month Doctor appointment we learned that you grew an inch and gained a pound! You're up to 9lbs, 14 oz and 23 inches long.  It's been crazy to see that you're already out of most of your newborn clothes. Taking them out of your drawers and packing them up already feels totally surreal. Unfortunately at your two month appointment you also got three shots, which resulted in a pretty cranky afternoon at home.

Other firsts during the last month, we took you to the beach near Mavericks in Half Moon Bay. A favorite spot of your Dad's and mine. We used to take your furry brother Parker there a lot until he injured his knee.

You also had your first Superbowl. Not that either of your parents give a rats *ss about football. We usually wear our hockey jerseys to Superbowl parties just to make sure everyone else knows that too.  But your good friend Bella's mommy was kind enough to mark the occasion with a custom onesie which was pretty neat.

Sometimes while I'm staring at you or packing you up to go somewhere, I still can't believe you're ours. Almost to the point where I feel like when I walk in somewhere in public, I feel like people assume I'm your nanny. It's kind of bizzarre. And while having you in my arms makes me feel more like a woman than I ever have before, the Mom title still feels a little foreign. I'm a Mom.
I'm YOUR Mom. And I love you SO fricken much.

Can't wait to see what next month brings!

Love,

One Month

Dearest Leah,

Okay, so I'm like a week late posting this. In my defense I had written most of it on time, but needed to wrap it up. I was however, quite busy taking care of you. Alright no more excuses! Hey, this is my first letter to you since you've been on the outside of me!  Thanks for joining us by the way. (I wrote several that I didn't post) The last few weeks have been a complete whirlwind. I'm happy to say there have only been a handful of times where I've lost my shit because of your crying. And only because I couldn't fix whatever the hell it was that made you screech like a pterodactyl. And I hate that. It makes my heart hurt. I can't do anything else when you're crying, all I want is to fix it. Literally, I was in the loo while your Dad was holding you and I couldn't pee because you were crying. He was doing his best to calm you down, and he did eventually, but until you were quiet, I just sat there paralyzed.

I am loving every day with you. As exhausted as I am when your daddy hands you to me first thing in the morning before he leaves for the day, I can't help but smile. You're typically either half asleep or screaming for breakfast. Either way, I'm so grateful to finally have you in my arms again. I miss you even when I'm sleeping, and as much as I love the longer stretches of sleep for all of us, it some how seems too long since the last time I saw your squishy little face.

We started you on a pacifier about a week ago. And even though you take a little time to remember how to use it, it's nice to have that cork little piece of plastic to please you. We also started you on a bottle. I'm working on pumping regularly so that your dad can feed you more often. I think it's nice for you to have that time together. And for me to have my hands free for a few minutes.

One of my favorite things to do with you is let you sleep on my chest. And the only thing I like more than that, is watching you sleep on your Dad's chest. I try to get at least four or five naps with you each week like that. I can't explain how wonderful that makes me feel.

Sometimes when you're napping next to me or in my arms, you smile and laugh in your sleep. It's SO UNBELIEVABLY ADORABLE, I can't stand it. You've smiled a few times while you're awake, but it doesn't appear to be a reaction to anything, more like a reflex. So I can't wait until I'm able to make you smile regularly. It makes me exctied about all the laughs we have ahead.

Speaking of sleep. You wake up to feed about every three to four hours. There have been a few times that you sleep a WHOLE six hours straight. Which in theory seems awesome, but I wake up in anticipation of you waking up and then lay there while I think to myself, "she'll wake up any second now..." And then I lose sleep checking your bassinet every four and a half minutes for an hour. Super.

At your last pediatrician appointment you measured 22 inches, and weighed 8lbs, 15oz. And no matter how long my list is of things that I'm terrified are "wrong" with you, the Doctor says you are just perfect.

And I couldn't agree more.

Can't wait to see what the next month brings...
