I'm going to be completely honest with you. Jillian Michaels made me cry.
Trembling bottom lip and everything.
On Saturday I started her 30 Day Shred Workout DVD, and OH. MAI. GAHD. I have never, EVER in my entire life been so sore. Head to toe. Wince when I walk, groan while getting out of bed, because sitting up actually requires abdominal muscles that I apparently have now. Anyway, I popped in the DVD late Saturday morning and listened to her little schpeal: "I'm awesome and strong and thin and you're not; so here's what I'm going to do about it", blah, blah, blah.
And then, it started.
Forty-seven seconds into the warm up I was already panting. Christ, I thought, only 19 minutes and 13 seconds to go - I CAN DO THIS!
So I did. But not without crying about sixteen minutes, and THREE different types of crunches later.
Something you should know about me.
I'm Norwegian.
I don't sweat.
Unless I'm sick. Or apparently about to collapse from exhaustion. (Seriously though, I never even have to wear deodorant.) But half way through this DVD, I was sweating like a whore in church. Pit stains and a stomach line, drenched in sweat. Alright, so maybe I can't blame the lack of sweating on being Norwegian. Maybe it's because I've just successfully maintained an exceedingly lethargic lifestyle for the last thirty-one years.
So I've worked out with this DVD everyday for the last four days. I'm following the lowest strength level, and so far it's not any easier for me than day one. It's probably even harder because my abs and quads are so sore that their tolerance is a lot lower. It's fucking hard man. By the end of the DVD I'm completely out of breath, sweating, trembling and bellowing with each of the slightest movements. But I'm going to keep doing it. Because it's good for me.
So this is the part where I'd tell you it was all worth it right? Today is Wednesday, weigh-in day. This is where I go on and on about how it was all worth my diet, sweat, and tears. But instead I'm sort of speechless. I only lost 0.5lbs.
I worked SO hard this last week. It just doesn't make sense. I have exercised Every. Single. Day. since last Thursday, and have almost nothing to show for it. My eating was good, I stayed right within the amount of calories I'm supposed to, I don't get it. I feel so, so defeated right now.

I just had to comment on this.
1) We have the same blog layout. Nice taste. :-)
2) I do the Shred workout too, and it WILL get easier. Never easy. But easier. It's worth it!
3) What calorie range are you staying in? I use MyFitnessPal.com and I didn't start seeing significant weight loss until I actually "ate my exercise calories" - they build in a defecit based on how active you are at work, how much you work out each day, what your weight loss goals are per week, etc.etc... and if you follow what they say, it will work!
4) Your body isn't on a 7 day schedule. Keep up with it another week and see what happens. You shouldn't be shooting for more than 1-2#/week weightloss anyway - you'll just end up discouraged and quitting!
5) With this being your first Shred week, your muscles are retaining water in order to "repair" themselves. That can cause temporary weight gain, but it's just water weight. Keep at it!
FYI - i'm 5'8" and have gone from 172# to 155# in about 5 1/2 months. I have another 13# to go to get to my goal weight. Not happening as quickly as I'd like, but hell, I'm not at 172# anymore!!
I think Jillian Michael's is the devil. When I started the 30 day shred I would actually curse at her the entire way through the 30 minutes..LOL!!! It is so hard but it does it get easier.
I didn't lose any weight the 1st week either, but I did notice my body getting more tone. Keep it up and you will definetly notice a difference.
I had to literally LOL at the part of your post where you talked about being Norwegian and not sweating. My husband is Norwegian, and he sweats when he exercises, but oddly, never has body odor.
I have lost 30+ lbs at least 4-5 times as an adult, and I've noticed that weight loss comes more slowly in the beginning if you are working out hard. I think it has something to do with the shock to your system and the fluid retention that comes from building muscles.
Drink lots and lots of water and keep at it. You will be more toned and have a higher resting metabolism if you stick with the exercise.
Way to go! That's so awesome....I wanna try her DVD! Doesn't muscle weigh more than fat? That could be why you're not seeing the pounds flying off like you feel they should be! Keep it up -- you'll start seeing a big difference soon.
When your muscles are worked out they can sometimes hold more water while they are healing. You'll probably see the results next week.
I only made it to day 8 of the shred, lol. I need to get that DVD back out. It's a quick morning work out.
PS - I'm 100% Norwegian and rarely sweat either. :)
You're only 4 days in! It often takes longer to really start losing the weight, but once you do, it will come. I've been there. For now, focus on those new muscles you can feel in your abs and buns and wherever else you're working out. You can do it!
I co-sign what all the other commenters have said (i.e. your muscles are retaining water, muscle weighs more than fat, weight comes off slowly in the beginning).
Before the wedding, there were a couple work-outs that left me literally crippled for 3 days after their completion. Fun times!
Jillian's face scares the poop out of me, but I'm sure she's an excellent trainer. =)
Keep up the good work, girl!
wow, I was thinking of actually getting this work out video because I'd like to lose a few final pounds still from pregnancy but that sounds like hell! It's so frustrating when you work so hard and don't have much to show for it. Hopefully this is just a hump you have to get over and then the pounds will fly off like nothing. I'm sure if you keep it up you will start to see changes but until then, I hope you can find a nice hot tub to sit in!
I bought the DVD last week & only did 1 day. I started again last night, but not so sure how long it will last (hey, we are being honest here!). But I totally get the cursing at her! When she says, "We are all in the same boat together" I screamed at the TV, "Bitch, you ain't ever been in this boat...and it's sinking!" I thought my DH was going to fall off the couch laughing! (Yes, he was sitting his round butt on the couch watchig) Good Luck and I hope it gets easier...for both our sake!
@Britt - just FYI, Jillian was an overweight kid/teenager, so she really does know what it's like! Part of the reason I like her. I need someone who's been there to yell at me. :)
I have a feeling next we'll you'll double the loss you expected this week. Don't give up!
Okay, Girlfriend, you have inspired me...I just bought Jillian's 3 DVD set. Bring it on! I wanna cry, too! I hate gyms, and video workout will be a whole new world for me, so we'll see.
I echo what some of the others have said here...try not to feel defeated, you are doing it and it will show.
It seems like it should be so easy, right? Eat less, move more? But I know it's just not that simple. Thanks for motivating me!
Um, yeah- I bought Jillian's 3 DVD set today too, thanks to you! My 6 week postpartum check is next week, and then I can kick it into high gear. And high gear I will need to get my "old" jeans over my thighs and lose 30 lbs, fast. Sigh.
Had to delurk so I could agree with you! Jillian's 30 day is horrible. My friends and I have decided she is the devil. Darn you Jillian! :) Good luck though!
Lol. I'm Norwegian, Swedish and Finn and I don't sweat unless it's a real ass-kickin either. But my face sure turns purple.
You can DO it!! (picture Rod Schneider saying this).
Girl, that woman is ruthless...but keep it up! I've tried her DVD's and found that if you shout "effing bitch" to her on the t.v. it makes you feel a lot better. What everyone else is saying about muscles retaining water and weighing more than fat is true...it may not show on the scale at first, but you'll lose inches and notice it in your clothes!
That's funny about the sweating! My hubby has absolutely no B.O., however he sweats like a pig! It's really weird!
You are so funny - I love it! I've only done the shred a couple times (which probably doesn't count because it's supposed to be done for 30 days...) but I can relate to the sweating, crying, and grunting. Ha!
I also had to laugh about the no sweat BO thing. My DH doesn't sweat or have BO either!! Thanks for the potential Norwegian explanation - I always just thougt he was strange. (He doesn't really know his heritage because his paternal grandfather died young).
You are doing AWESOME!!
I know it has been some time since this post, so I hope that the working out has gotten easier, at least with the initial getting back into it. Man this Jillian Michaels seems extreme, but hope it gives you the results you are looking for!
And as much as you may feel deflated in the small loss this past week, it is still a loss. Keep at it! You can do it woman and I believe in you!!!
Wow, good for you!
Just thought I'd comment to let you know that it DOES take your body at least 5 days to "register" any sort of REAL weight loss once you've started a new work out program. Keep it up, and you'll start seeing some serious results with in a couple of weeks.
Good luck!
I love the shred, but you're right...it kicks your ass! It really does get better! And the best part is that it really and truly does work.
Wishing you all the best as you move forward with deciding your next TTC options, and also with the weight loss.
