Georgia On My Mind

In a little over a week from now I'll be heading to Atlanta for a weekend of fun with a few incredible ladies that I've only ever spoken to online.

In September of 2008, at just over a year of trying, I made my first attempt in searching for other women who weren't pregnant after a year either and stumbled upon an online forum with a “trying to conceive over a year” board. Little did I know that this group would become my saving grace in the treacherous early stages of IF. Where everything is scary, and you feel really alone, and you don’t even know enough to know that you don’t know about the path you are about to embark on.

Carli, Des, Ellie, Jamie, Lau, Katie, Kerri, and Melissa, (I listed you in Alphabetical order because you’re all equally amazing) my cheerleaders, my rocks, my virtual tissue passers, I don’t know how to thank you all for your unwavering support. They were with me even before we started testing. I don’t think she knows this but Kerri was the one who got me to make my blog public once she shared the link to hers. Shortly after I told her about mine I began getting random comments from bloggers I'd never heard of, and suddenly I was catapulted into the IF Blogosphere. And thank G-d for that!

I’m thrilled to say that four of ladies I listed are either mothers or are soon to be, and they continue to be my inspirations that I will get there “someday, someway”. Since they are either new full time Mommies now or too far along to travel, I’m sorry to say not everyone can join us… Ellie, Lau, Katie, and Kerri, you will be sorely missed, but I hope I can meet you in person someday. Maybe in like five years everyone can meet up at Disneyland or something... (Ellie, I know you especially would be down for that!)

We’ve all taken very different paths DI, IUI, IVF, Pregnancy, Motherhood, Adoption, and a few of us are in other unique transitions. Much like with many of you in the blogosphere, regardless of each person’s status I feel a tremendous bond, and hope that things will blossom to a lifetime friendship. (And I secretly hope we’re all here bitching about out of state College tuition and Menopause in 10, 20 and even 30 years)

Anyhoo, one of the ladies I listed above is opening her home up for the few of us who can make it. So this trip is basically only costing us a plane ticket. I can tell you in all honesty, that I wouldn’t be able to make this trip otherwise. So thank you – you know who you are…

I'm sure to most of you I must seem like the cliche Social Butterfly considering how much I blather on about having met a few local bloggers, which is funny because I am normally not a very social person AT ALL. I hate going to parties, or dinners where I know I'm going to be forced to meet and socialize with new people. And "Mingling" is pretty much my worst nightmare... But there is something about meeting other people who've dealt with IF, an unspoken kinship and understanding that makes each encounter a breeze. It also makes me feel incredibly grateful to have been introduced to such an immense support system. I don't even want to think about where I'd be without the support and encouragement I've gotten from all of you!

So wish me luck on my trip. Not for the going to meet virtual strangers part, but that the Transderm Scōp patch I just got from my doctor actually works. It's supposed to prevent Vertigo and motion sickness (which I have unwillingly acquired in my old age - I'll be 31 Saturday. Boo.) Cause there's nothing like violent turbulence and vomiting to start off a good conversation with the actual stranger sitting next to you on a four and a half hour flight.

Can you whip up a contract stating that you MUST return to us in CA, and have your Georgia blog buddies sign it? Because I'm pretty sure that once they meet you, they may hold you captive. =)

I'm so excited to hear all about your adventures! Yay!

And Happy Early Birthday to yoooou! We'll have to get together to celebrate some time later this month! (K, off to email you now)

So cool you are getting a chance to meet your IF Sistas in person!

Blogland is such an incredible place don't ya think? Isn't it amazing how well, how comfortable we feel chatting with others we've never met in person? But they know. They get it. And it makes all the difference.

I hope one day we can have a meet up with some other wonderful bloggers we know who don't live here.

Happy early b-day to you, dear IF Sister! I hope to celebrate with you and toast you with apple juice (...or a cocktail) in a few weeks!

ps - I second Meg, please be sure to have them sign the "Return Melissa to CA" contract! :)

It's so exciting your trip is around the corner!

You are definitely not the cliche Social Butterfly. You are an inspiration and your ability to communicate is awesome.

Good luck with the flight ...vertigo does not sound fun.

Yay a girly trip, and an IF girly trip at that! I have met a few people from the bulletin boards that I post on and I have to agree with you, its like you automatically have a bond that would take years and years in normal circumstances (whatever normal is... i'm yet to discover 'normal'). Its so nice to be around people that 'get' you and although so many of my close friends and family try thier best, they never truely understand it, so I completely understand your gratitude and appreciation for meeting likeminded IF sisters. Enjoy your trip!!
Happy birthday for Saturday!!!!!

Duuuuuude. I'M in Atlanta....sounds like you won't have much free time, but e-mail me if you want to get together. There's this family baby shower I'd love to have a reason to skip out on. (not my own) ;-)

I'm so honored that I'm the one who got you to come out of the blogging closet! :) You girls are going to have a blast on this trip. Please take a lot of pictures!! Love you.

Sounds like you are going to have a blast. As for the motion sickness, I use the Seabands (They sell them at drugstores). They worked really well for me.

Still so jealous that y'all are meeting up this year and I can't go with like last year. I think you are going to have so much fun- I know I did on the first "Annual TTC 1 year+ Trip." I think there should definitely be a 3rd annual trip next year!

It is such a neat circle of support- because I credit YOU for getting me to start a blog... and I'm sure the trickle down effect kept going with someone after me.

Happy early birthday- I think the 6th would be a great birthday indeed. :)

You have been an AMAZING support to all of us as well. I am so honored to call you a friend and I'm so sad I won't be getting to meet all of you on the trip. I know you will have an amazing time though and I want to hear all about it! You girls are like a second family to me and I couldn't have gotten through this without you!

I also get terrible motion sickness so I feel your pain. I went on a cruise a few years ago and used the patch. I think it will definitely help but unfortunately it didn't take mine away completely. I'm proud to say I didn't throw up the entire cruise though (major plus). Have a wonderful time! Love you much!

Wow have an amazing time. Would love to meet fellow bloggers one day, must be an incredible experience. Big hugs. Oh and hope the flying patch works!

I'm so, so excited for all of you!! And a little envious. There is nothing like gabbing with a bunch of infertiles IRL who get it! Have a great time and best of luck holding your cookies :(

And BTW, at this very moment I am plying hooking from a work/client happy hour b/c that stuff is my worst nightmare too. Another thing in common my friend!

Your trip sounds like so much fun!! I hope you have a wonderful time (and don't get motion sickness). Can't wait to hear all about it! =)

Oh Sweetie,

You managed to make me spill tears all over my toast! Thank you for your lovely words.

As I've said many times on the board, I wish I had met you all under happier circumstances but the one true good thing about all this mess we're in is the friendships we've created. You know I couldn't have done it without you. I've been picked up so many times when I thought I was falling deeper and deeper into the darkness.

I absolutely adore your idea of meeting again and of bitching about anything and everything for years to come. Let's do it!

I so wish I could be going on this trip to meet you all. I'm a little bit jealous of all the fun you'll have ;-) What a fantastic way to spend your birthday (and stop this nonsense about old age... what's left for the rest of us then?)

Have a superb time, don't do anything I wouldn't do, and if you do, come back and tell us all about it! ;-)

Hugs and happy early birthday!

Happy Birthday a day late! I tried everything in my power to share the awesomeness of your birthday, but no luck. Hope you had a great day and a great weekend!
